It may seem crazy that you’d get bored with a book, right? Well, sometimes it happens. Maybe the plot isn’t what you thought it would be, or perhaps you tried a new author but didn’t like their style. That’s okay! Other times, you might be in a book slump. Reading seems like a chore, and everything on your shelf seems unreadable. When you sit down with a book, you just can’t concentrate. It can feel like when you start a book you have to finish it, but that’s not necessarily the case. Don’t force yourself to read something you don’t enjoy- especially if it’s keeping you from a book you CAN enjoy! We’ve got a few tips to break you out of your reading slump:
Get out of your comfort zone! Graphic novels are a fun way to get your reading in. They’re a faster read than most, but still have a compelling storyline. You really get to envision the characters and plot because of the pictures, and the illustrations are an art form in themselves. If you’re looking for another way to enjoy reading would be to pop in an audio book! If you don’t have time to sit down and read, this is the perfect solution. You can listen to audio books while exercising, driving, or relaxing in the evening. They’re a way to break out of the “norm” of turning the pages to read.
Try Something New
It might be times to switch up genres for a book or two. As I mentioned before, reading the same type of books can get repetitive. Perhaps it’s time for you to branch out into horror with a Stephen King novel, or maybe you need to start reading some sci-fi! If you always read fiction and are looking for a change, I would suggest picking a person you admire and read their book (if they have one), or if there’s a historical event you’ve always wondered about- read a book that comments on it.
Find a New Reading Spot
You may love your favorite recliner, but it’s about that time to enjoy the warm weather outside! Take a trip to the lake and read by one of the benches, or break out a hammock if you have one. It can be refreshing to change up your reading spot (coffee shops are always a good option too). It helps you to refocus and maybe get away from some distractions.
